I am just curious and I am sure others are also. Here is a poll asking if you have diaspora running right now so you have your own seed.

Yes, I have my seed up and running. I have already uploaded test pictures also. Since I am not at home until next week, this seed is installed on a friends computer. This means I will have to recreate my seed later I think on my own computer. I'm not sure how diaspora really works with that. Anyway it was fairly easy to install. I did not run into any errors during setup on my friends' Ubuntu machine. Let me know what problems you have in a PM and I will do my best to help.

I do not, but I will by the end of the weekend. Unless you have a linux server (install instructions are for Ubuntu) or know someone who does (I have one at work), you are not going to find this in any way easy.

I gave a rough scan through the code last night and I feel good that the work Diaspora has done with the application itself is very strong. However, for this to have a chance of catching on with anyone other than linux geeks, it is going to need to be repackaged for use on a wide variety of platforms.

I am going to join the development effort and I have two short term goals:

    1. Run it on a windows machine as-is (RoR can be served via Apache or IIS with some tweaking)
    2. Create an install package to make it easy to install on a windows machine as-is

The long term goal would be to rework all but the Diaspora core (maybe even rewriting large portions in something other than Ruby on Rails) so there can be a selection of platforms, including easy native (local) service on a personal machine.

If someone who has installed it can post a web link to a sand-box instance (a dummy profile that anyone can sign into) so people can see and play with it, that would be great.

If you are going to work on an installer for windows. May I suggest cygwin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cygwin for easier migration from linux to windows. It is used for many linux ports to windows such as deluge which was developed with linux. Also, I agree to open a sandbox. You can all create accounts as you wish as I don't care much about the preview install. I will get working on it asap.

Mollusk I read you were planning to work on an installer. You also seem considerably more familiar with Linux than I am and you may have more available time. I will still look at packaging this but certainly please don't let my goals deter you from doing it. You have a better chance of getting one out sooner than I do.

    Thanks for the Cygwin suggestion.

I simply know some of the tools needed to do certain things. I am in no way an experienced programmer especially for windows. I can make a simple bash script for Linux and maybe a basic calculator in C but nothing much more than that. I do however have quite a bit experience with Linux.

I have a good bit of experience with windows. I have programmed many business apps for my employer (large media & retail company). I used to program native apps but for the past several years almost exclusively web apps so I haven't had to make an install package in a while. I'll be rusty but the wheels should still be turning. I am very versed in SQL and ASP.Net. C Sharp is my preferred language. I am not a C++ programmer (i.e. "real" programmer as one of my peers liked to joke) but I still understand and can navigate most of the Windows intricacies like process threads, TCP sockets, services, registry, etc.

I'd still probably be simply batching this stuff together myself.

I have it running on windows vista. A few changes have to be made to ruby stuff but it seems to be working no problem. I can summerize and create a new thread if you want.
