WTF is going on? I'm seeing this huge orange banner that is trying to force me to post some uncool shit about being "new here" - but actually won't let me post anything. And the display in FF 3.6.15/WinXP is totally screwed.

I just got home. I will login and check it out. Thanks for the heads up.

Things are being tweaked as I type. It seems it was an attempt at a new user prompt that went a bit screwy. The effects vary from browser to browser - I still don't have a "share" button, and the items that should display on the RHS of the screen are now way down below everything else on the left.
-
I'd suggest upgrading your browser, but I suspect there's a specific reason you're using FF3
-
haha - yes, I'm not shifting off 3 for a little while yet. I may move up to a later release though (FF3.6x is being supported - whereas several later versions, 4+, have been dropped).
Currently everything is back in its proper place - unless I search for a hashtag. Hence, the screen is OK if vewing "aspects", but it only works for "stream" if I don't follow any hashtags at all.
-
Just curious why you are on 3?
I use 8 and its very nice and uses less memory.

I'm just awkward.... ;-)
Actually, I didn't shift initially as I was waiting for any adblock plus incompatibilities to be ironed-out. I currently run a netbook (WinXP) with a 3G dongle, and if I don't use adblock plus I find that my 3gb monthly allowance runs out (due to all the animated adverts).
Also, the rapid increments - 4, 5, 6, 7 - didn't inspire confidence. Interestingly, during all these increments Mozilla continued to support (and develop) FF 3.6.x - even when support for 4 & 5 was dropped. And it is still being supported for a little while longer - possibly because of the large user base.
To top it off, I've also been studying part-time at my local university, and all their internal servers (wikis & course admin websites) had been developed/tested on FF 3.6.x (and the online journal papers search and download facilities worked smoothly with it too) - hence it was safer to stick with what I knew worked until the end of the course.
I guess there are lots of reasons why people stick with older browsers. Another one could be that they have a relatively slow connection - so large downloads can be too much hassle.
Also, many corporate users have no choice of the browser they use - and may be limited to IE8 (the highest version that will run on XP - which many corporate networks still use).
D* does not work well with IE8 - which seems to be programming policy (or could be a natural result of using particular Ruby modules, I guess).

D* is using HTML5, isn't it? So there are bound to be compatibility issues.

Those could cause a problem during the beta ramp-up of users. How many potential users will be using HTML5 compliant browsers?

OK guys, I give in. I've just installed FF 7.01 (latest non-beta release), after reading that they had sorted adblock glitches. All is running fine, so far. On Joindiapora I now get the little icons - so everything looks a little neater.
The worry I still have for D* is that many people (ie. the "normals") just go with whatever is on their machine when they get it. The links above show that a lot of people are running IE (40%), and many other people will be running older versions of the alternative browsers (they just rely on techy friends to sort things out when their machine stops working) - so their first impression of D* may be poor.
-
By the time the "normals" start using D* seriously (if that'll ever happen) I'm sure most of their browsers will support HTML5.
